ICE-BREAKER:
THE 1972 SUMMIT SERIES

PLAY TRAILER

SYNOPSIS

Russia, war in Europe and the threat of nuclear conflict are back on top of the international agenda. Fifty years ago, in 1972, Canada faced a similar challenge of military escalation with the Soviet Union. It was met through a historic, best-on-best hockey series, providing common ground for both nations. More than 20 million Canadians and 150 million Soviet citizens were mesmerized by what is known as the "Summit Series." It led to an outstanding display of sports diplomacy, put a human face on communism and reduced the risk of war.

ICE BREAKER takes viewers deep inside this iconic series with fascinating revelations off and on the ice, featuring an impressive cast of diplomats, politicians, journalists, broadcasters, fans and Canadian and Russian hockey legends. Participants include Wayne Gretzky, Vladislav Tretiak, Igor Larionov, Ron Maclean, Mike Keenan, Margaret Trudeau, Terry Mosher "Aislin", Harnarayan Singh, Alan Eagleson, Danielle Sauvageau, Roy MacGregor, Angela James and former Canadian diplomat Gary J. Smith. Smith was instrumental in the behind-the-scenes negotiations that made the series happen, while keeping it from falling apart.

Drawing on a wealth of extraordinary archival material, ICE BREAKER tells untold stories from the “Summit Series”, with fresh perspectives and unique analysis, The film explores the impact of the games on Canadians from coast to coast, uniting East and West, French and English, young and old, immigrants and Indigenous communities.

On September 28, 1972, when the final game was played in Moscow’s Luzhniki Arena, Canada came to a halt. Schools and businesses shut down. Streets were empty. 90% of Canadians were glued to their radios and TVs. When Paul Henderson scored the winning goal, millions of Canadians poured into the streets, dancing and cheering in scenes reminiscent of the celebrations at the end of WWII. The Summit Series has been designated as one of the most significant events in Canadian history, solidifying our national identity and our place in the world, while creating a sense of belonging for new Canadians.

ICE BREAKER also explores the bigger impact of the '72 series, and the common bonds of winter, sport and geography that draw Canadians and Russians together. Images of northern landscapes, snow covered forests and outdoor rinks bring the film an aesthetic language and poetic beauty. As Ron Maclean eloquently states “The ice is the magic carpet, the hockey rink our best friend."

In times of conflict and war, sport and culture can be important bridges, reminding us of our shared humanity.
