White Pine Pictures presents
Triage: Dr. James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma
Selected for 2008 Sundance Film Festival in World Cinema Documentary Competition
Thursday, November 29, 2007: White Pine Pictures is proud to announce its new feature documentary Triage: Dr. James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma, directed by Patrick Reed and produced by Peter Raymont, has been selected by the prestigious Sundance Film Festival for its World Cinema Documentary Competition—one of only sixteen films selected from 620 submissions.
Following its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), Triage: Dr. James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma graphically explores the ultimate humanitarian nightmare. Racing against time with limited resources, relief workers make split-second decisions: who gets treatment; who gets food; who lives; who dies.
Director Patrick Reed follows Dr. James Orbinski, recipient of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize as President of Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders, on a heart-wrenching journey back to the lands and people whose life-and-death struggle marked him forever. Returning to Somalia, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo, where he was field doctor with MSF during the 1990s, Orbinski revists the past and engages with the present. Having seen the best and worst of humanitarian assistance and humanity itself, Orbinski hopes that here, in the place where he witnessed lives literally torn apart, he can rediscover the true heart of humanitarianism.
Director Patrick Reed (Tsepong: A Clinic Called Hope) was drawn to Dr. Orbinski when they first met in Rwanda in 2004. Reed was there with Peter Raymont, filming Shake Hands With The Devil. Reed says of Dr. Orbinski: “There is an excessive emphasis in Western culture on healing—whether physical or psychic—on overcoming and moving on. What’s fascinating about Dr. James Orbinski is he consciously struggles with the most painful memories and addresses the most difficult currently realities not to lessen his burden but to share it with others, compelling us to see the world in a different way. He lives honestly, with as little fear as possible, and invites others to do the same.”
Filmed in an intense verité style by the creative team behind the Emmy Award-winning documentary Shake Hands With the Devil, Triage presents a unique view of the world through the penetrating eyes of Orbinski and, in the most unlikely of places, he finds where bonds of solidarity are forged, and human spirits somehow remain unbroken.
Triage: Dr. James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma is produced by Peter Raymont (White Pine Pictures), in co-production with Silva Basmajian (NFB). To be broadcast on Global TV in Spring 2008.
Dr. James Orbinski’s book, An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action for the 21st Century, will be published by Doubleday Canada in April 2008.
Triage: Dr James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma is a White Pine Pictures and National Film Board of Canada co-production. Produced in association with CanWest Media and with the support of The Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
