Director Profile

Jean-François Monette

With Henry de Puyjalon: Lone Wolf of the North Shore, Jean-François Monette discovered the determined passions of one of Canada's first naturalists. Monette's career began with Anatomy of Desire, a documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada and a company he founded in 1993, Bare Bone Films. Co-directed with Peter Tyler Boullata, the film is a fascinating analysis of the problems between bio-deterministic science and sexual orientation.

After receiving his MFA in Film at Concordia University in 1998, Jean-François Monette produced and directed the autobiographical documentary Where Lies the Homo? This experimental documentary, dealing with media analysis and identity, received the Best Lesbian and Gay Film Award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival in 1999.

As well as another episode for A Scattering of Seeds, René Richard: Painter of the North, Jean-François Monette has produced and directed his first fiction film. Take-Out is a medium length drama that deals with a teenager's coming-out.
