- Question 2
- The majority of Haitian
immigrants to Québec came because they were looking for better
The mass exodus of Haitians began with the bloody dictatorship of
Francois Duvalier in the early 1960s. "Papa Doc" Duvalier, and later
his son, "Baby Doc" Duvalier robbed Haiti blind and instigated a reign
of terror against their own people that was one of the most brutal
in the history of the region. Using the dreaded "Ton Ton Macoute"
police force, the Duvaliers tortured and murdered political opponents,
extorted money and bankrupt the economy. Haitians fled from the terror,
sneaking around laws that forbid them to leave. The Haitian diaspora,
including all emigrants and their immediate descendants, is estimated
to number close to 1 million. Many chose Canada as their new home,
usually Québec for religious and linguistic reasons.
