The first Francopone theatre in Montréal, Le Monument National,
was established in 1894 by the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. The Monument
National was located on rue Saint-Laurent. It was a four-storey building
with a hall that seated 1,496 spectators. The Nationoscope, the Canadien
Francais and the Farhood's Chanteclerc were the next major house to
open, in 1912.
