- Question 4
- When the Bessai family
of Edmonton, Alberta sponsored the family of Boat People, the two families
found it impossible to communicate or relate to one another's culture.
The families of the Lais and the Bessais initially had difficulty
communicating with each other, but they soon found ways of learning
about each other and sharing their distinctive cultures. Filmmaker
Carl Bessai and his brother taught the Bessai boys how to play the
quintessential Canadian game of hockey and that helped them learn
English. Mrs. Bessai and Mrs. Lai had to share a kitchen, and Mrs.
Lai took to regularly preparing large feasts of Vietnamese cuisine
in thanks for the generosity of their adopted family.
