- Question 3
- The English who came
to Canada in the early 19th century most often had political motives.
The English who came to Canada directly from England usually had economic
reasons. The early 19th century saw many working people unemployed
in England. The motives of the English who came to Canada from the
United States, however, were often political. Many were Loyalists,
fleeing the American Revolution and siding with the British. They
received special status and land grants in return for their loyalty
to the British Crown. Others simply wanted a safe and peaceful home.
