Loyalists, in response to the American Revolution; Black slaves, fleeing
the fugitive slave laws; farmers, looking for open land in the frontier;
sectarian groups such as Mennonites and Hutterites, seeking religious
freedom; and war resistors trying to escape the draft and find political
refuge from the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
