- Question 2
- Martha became known
as the First Lady of the Yukon because she married George Black who
became commissioner of the Yukon.
True.
Martha became known as the First Lady of the Yukon because her husband
George Black was appointed commissioner of the Yukon. In the political
sense, Martha reigned as first lady. But Martha also generated her
own legacy for her vision of what the Yukon and Yukoners were all
about. She opened the Government House in Dawson City to the real
Yukoners: miners, prospectors, and many others. She became an expert
on Yukon flora and fauna. And when her husband was unable to defend
his parliamentary seat due to ill health, she ran in his stead and
became the second female Member of Parliament in Canada.
