- Question 1
- Martha Black came to
Canada because her husband was following the Gold Rush.
False.
Martha Black came to Canada because she wanted to go on an adventure
and find her fortune in gold. She had initially planned to go with
her husband, Will Purdy, but he backed out at the last minute and
Martha went on without him. She arrived late, on August 5, 1898, but
did quite well nevertheless. She worked a claim staked at Excelsior
Creek on her way into Dawson. Fortunately, the claim proved rich.
After a short trip back home to visit her parents, Martha returned
to Dawson in 1900, succeeded in the sawmill business and made a new
life for herself in Canada's Yukon.
