- Question 3
- Assimilation is the
process of allowing minorities to retain parts of their cultural identity
while becoming part of the larger Canadian society.
False.
Assimilation is the process of trying to refashion minorities into
the image of the dominant majority at the expense of their cultural
identity. On the other hand, integration is the process of allowing
immigrants to maintain parts of their cultural heritage and identity
while at the same time becoming a part of mainstream society. Mary
Ann Shadd was a Black educator, newspaper editor and lawyer who advocated
for the integration, rather than assimilation or segregation, of Blacks
in Canadian society.
