1971. It became legislation as the Multiculturalism Act, which was unanimously passed in 1988. The
Multiculturalism Act states in its preamble that its purpose is "to preserve and enhance the
multicultural heritage of Canadians while working to achieve the equality of all Canadians in
economic, social, cultural and political life of Canada.
