Night is the province of dreams, and the graveyard shift the territory of dream weavers.
Jackie O'Keefe is a 39-year-old police officer at 52 Division in Toronto. She's been a cop for less than two years. In her mid-thirties, she made a career change that was strongly motivated by a desire to make a difference in her community. Jocular, bright and forthright, Jackie's seen more than her fair share of action in the short amount of time she's been enforcing the law. She works rotating shifts which include obligatory all-nighters. On these shifts, she's seen both the seamy underbelly and the most tender parts of night in a big city.
Alina (obviously not his real name) is a female impersonator at El Convento Rico by night, and an adult high school student by day. He has known he was gay since he was six and found his home country, Ecuador, a very hard place to be gay. He found acceptance in Toronto when he arrived six years ago at age 16.
A friend brought him to El Convento. Alina competed to win the Miss El Convento title, but was crowned princess only. Now, he is determined to become Miss El Convento, and to graduate as a make-up artist in order to help people.
Gina Lee, DJ Flow 93.5's CRTC licence was a hard-won battle. An all-black "urban" radio station has never been tried before in Canada. "Urban" is code for black music - hip hop, rap, R&B, and soul. When Flow 93.5 was finally granted its licence last year, Gina Lee, 25 years old and a Ryerson grad, was ecstatic. She immediately applied to be a DJ and won the job. She's hyped, nervous and full of hope that black music will finally have a home in the mainstream culture. A lot is ridding on her success.
