I wanted to tell the story of today’s independent “muckrakers” from my own perspective. As a former investigative producer I know how difficult it can be to uncover deception and reveal truths. These new independent journalists are fighting the same kind of David and Goliath battle Izzy Stone did decades ago, a battle for nothing less than truth and justice at a time when the Stone quote “All governments lie” was never more apt.
– Fred Peabody
My father once told me, “If something goes wrong with government, a free press will ferret it out and it will get fixed. But if something goes wrong with the free press, the country will go straight to hell.”
-Jeremy J. Stone, son of I.F. Stone
Wednesday, August 3, 2016: White Pine Pictures is honoured that Fred Peabody’s debut feature documentary All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception and the Spirit of I.F. Stone will have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the TIFF Docs programme.
Former investigative journalist and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Fred Peabody’s documentary feature will change the way you watch and read the news.
Media conglomerates are increasingly reluctant to investigate or criticize government policies. Many journalists are finding that to aggressively investigate governments rather than act as “stenographers to power”, they need to abandon mainstream corporate news media to work at alternative, web-based sites.
In All Governments Lie, Peabody explores the legacy of I.F. Stone, widely held as the conscience of investigative journalism, whose groundbreaking reporting filled his tiny 4-page newsletter, I.F. Stone’s Weekly, from 1953 to 1971.
I.F. Stone inspired many of those changing the face of journalism who are featured in All Governments Lie, including groundbreaking journalists Amy Goodman (Democracy Now!), Glenn Greenwald (The Intercept), Jeremy Scahill (Dirty Wars/The Intercept), Matt Taibbi (Rolling Stone), David Corn (Mother Jones), filmmakers such as Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11) and others.
In All Governments Lie, Peabody’s cameras follow journalists as they uncover government and corporate secrets – just as I.F. Stone did decades ago. Peabody captures Rolling Stone contributing editor Mike Taibbi covering the 2016 U.S. primary in New Hampshire, and Amy Goodman and Nermeen Shaikh prepping a show in the New York newsroom of Democracy Now!. With 1,300 outlets, Democracy Now! has consistently covered stories ahead of mainstream media. Stories like a July 2012 U.S. shooting of civilians and reporters in Iraq that was ignored by mainstream media until Wikileaks released classified U.S. helicopter footage 3 years later. Goodman and Shaikh also visit Europe’s largest refugee camp in Calais, France, where refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq describe the attacks that forced them to flee, including U.S. drone attacks that killed civilians.
Peabody follows independent journalist John Carlos Frey in his yearlong investigation into the shocking cover up of mass graves of undocumented migrants who perished in the brutal heat of the Texas desert, after crossing the border from Mexico. Peabody also obtains unprecedented behind-the-scenes access at The Intercept, where co-founders Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill describe their many recent scoops, and cameras capture their ongoing investigation into the use of German satellite towers to coordinate assassinations by U.S. drones.
Cenk Uygur, founder and host of the daily web show The Young Turks, shares with Peabody why he left mainstream media. A commentator and anchor on MSNBC, Uygur criticized President Obama for abandoning his progressive promises. Uygur lost his show after MSNBC president Phil Griffin told him, “Cenk, I was just in Washington, and they’re not happy with your tone.” The Young Turks are now the world’s largest web based news show, with 1 billion views on YouTube.
In All Governments Lie, Peabody also meets with veterans like Noam Chomsky, Ralph Nader, Chris Hedges, and Carl Bernstein who weigh in on how I.F. Stone influenced their work.
All Governments Lie is a timely documentary for audiences who are increasingly seeking alternatives to news media owned by large corporations. News events and journalistic trailblazers stretching over many decades are linked together to tell an important story. All Governments Lie will resonate with audiences in Canada, the U.S., and worldwide, as news media ownership increasingly falls into the hands of a few giant corporations.
